George Bush’s moral crusade against abortion is going global, with threats that he will defund any organisation that co-operates with the United Nations Population Fund – or UNFPA – and its reproductive health programs. The UNFPA came under scrutiny two years ago for supposedly promoting abortions in developing countries. It was subsequently de-funded, despite a US State Department report that found no supporting evidence and the enthusiastic endorsement of the fund’s work by Colin Powell. Supporters of the fund say that the Bush Administration’s pandering to conservative supporters has gone too far and that very poor women already in powerless situations are going to be hardest hit. Margaret Reynolds is the National President of the United Nations Association in Australia. She spoke with Paulina Vidal about the allegations that the UNFPA promotes abortion.
