Burma rocked by protests and arrests
The military regime in Burma has again cracked down on protesters, last week arresting more than 100 people who were demonstrating against rising oil prices, and calling for the restoration of democracy. And the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma is calling for the Howard government to take a stand against the military junta, which has been in power for 45 years. In 1990, the Burmese people voted overwhelmingly for change in the form of the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, but the military simply refused to hand over power. Greens NSW member of Parliament, John Kaye, is President of the Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma. Earlier today, I asked him what happened at last week’s protests.
