Although they are usually seen as spiritual guides, Buddhist monks are also powerful political activists. Just days before the violent conflicts began in China and Tibet Buddhist monks staged a number of peaceful demonstrations to express their discontent with the Chinese Government. And in September last year, Buddhist monks flexed their political muscles in Burma to speak out against the anti-democratic regime.
