Brazil’s President Rousseff to be impeached ; Internecine war in Papua New Guinea’s police

On the eve of the world Olympics in Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff is the least likely government official to get an opening ceremony ticket.  She has failed in her attempt to avoid an impeachment vote in the lower house and it appears the upper house of Brazil’s parliament will also vote for her impeachment.  This will mean she will have to stand aside from the Presidency, whilst the impeachment process proceeds and her faithful deputy Michel Temer, who could teach Machiavelli a thing or two about politics, will step in to her shoes.  With a faltering economy, high unemployment and a less than 10% approval rating, the loss of Olympics prestige looked like the sole hope President Rousseff had of getting her shoes back.

But events in the upper echelons of the Papua New Guinea police yesterday culminated in the sacking of the Fraud and Anti-Corruption squad just before they reportedly had a chance to issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.  This seems like another chapter in the unique version of PNG power politics
