A report released today claims the Australian and New Zealand governments bullied their way into a free trade agreement that the Pacific Islands didn’t want. Entitled ‘Big Brothers Behaving Badly’ – The Implications for the ‘Pacific Islands of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations’ (or PACER), was researched by a network of non government groups. The Pacific Network On Globalisation, commissioned the report to deal with concerns raised by the signing of the agreement in 1999, and was released ahead of the Pacific Island Forum Summit, held in Auckland today. Alia Mcmullen spoke to the report’s author, Auckland University Law Professor and trade negotiation expert, Jane Kelsey.
