Bi-Lingual Aboriginal students trumping in literacy
A West Australian school principal says because indigenous students are able to learn about their culture they’re achieving better results than most schools in the state. The comment comes with this weeks opening of the re-vamped Djidi Djidi Aboriginal school at Bunbury which has specialised in traditional learning since 1996. Principal Felicity Deer says with most students at the school having English as their second language it’s an amazing achievement for the school to lead the state in reading levels. Bunbury elder and teacher at the school Gloria Dan says the school is proving Indigenous students are more comfortable learning the traditional way than in the mainstream system.
