What does it mean to be Australian? It’s a question few of us can answer easily. The dominant analogies come to mind: the bush, the bloke, beaches and egalitarianism. But how much of this really represents who we are as a people? A national identity may be a flag we can all unite under, but it is also a fiction, and in that fiction, some of us get written out. Catriona Elder is the author of a new book, “Being Australian: Narratives Of National Identity”. She discussed the notion of being Australian.
