It’s Anti- violence week and Indigenous men are being called upon to say No more, there is no excuse. Australia’s Indigenous communities especially women have been fighting against family violence for many years. Mr Warren Mundine has declared that “ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men have to take the leadership. Men have to make the change or will not happen.” As ambassador for the UN Development Fund for women to help fight domestic violence, he believes the statistics are telling us now is the time to act. Indigenous women are 24 times more likely to be raped than non –Indigenous women, and up to 70% of our women have been abused. As 82% of perpetrators in family violence are men, support workers and men’s groups have welcomed Mr Mundine’s stance.
