In the midst of the Government’s massive shake up of mainland immigration detention, it’s been announced that $5 million will be spent on upgrading South Australia’s Baxter Detention facility. But this announcement has come at the same time as news that it’ll be mothballed by mid 2008. The Director of the Australian Refugee Association Kevin Liston, was at Parliament House today speaking with Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone. He talked about the building of a new medical centre and kitchen and sporting facilities. Port Augusta Mayor Joy Baluch says she’s glad the detention centre will be mothballed.
