The Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, has today defended the Government’s stance towards the death penalty. Critics say if the government is serious about it’s opposition to capital punishment, it should apply in all cases. The accusation comes as the Minister plans to meet his Indonesian counterpart in Jakarta tomorrow. Many accuse the government of being inconsistent and say if the Foreign Minister pleads for clemency with the Bali Nine, he should also do so for the Bali Bombers.
