Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer has announced that the backpacker tax will be delayed for 6 months. The proposed tax would have saved the Government $540 million in the budget over the next three years, by taxing backpackers 32.5% on all their earnings. This is what the experts call ‘neutralising negatives’, with the government trying to end concerns about their more disputed policies before the election. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has also returned to safe messages about border security, as he continues on the campaign trail.
