Independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon are drafting a bill this week to give journalists’ confidential sources more protection. And it’s likely to be successful. It’s similar to federal Coalition policy, which means the independents only need the speaker’s vote to pass the bill. It coincides with a call from the Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls for all state and federal governments to adopt New Zealand’s current shield laws.
