Australia’s foreign minister visits Fiji for the first time since military coup

Fiji has been ruled by commander Frank Bainimarama since a military coup in December 2006. Today, after two years of cold diplomatic relations, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has met with the coup leader in Fiji. Smith’s visit has been seen by some as an attempt to ensure that Bainimarama will hold promised democratic elections in March next year.
