When it comes to food Australians are not conscientious. Every year we put $5 billion dollars worth of fresh food into the bin. Besides the egregious waste of food the opportunity cost of having excess food in the fridge is the decline of local metropolitan farmers. These farmers need a higher price for their products but city denizens prefer to use their money to buy excess cheap food and throw it in the bin.
