A rally highlighting the ongoing violence in West Papua has been held outside Parliament House today. Activists have gathered to protest the Australian government’s role in funding and training Indonesian military forces.

They blame Indonesian counter-terrorism group Detachment-88 for the killing of civilians and human rights abuses. Many West Papuans don’t accept Indonesian sovereignty over their land and there are concerns that Detachment-88 is silencing this opposition. The recent promise of an Australian-Indonesian arms trade agreement has also sparked outrage.
