Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce from rural New South Wales and teal independent Monique Ryan from leafy inner-city Melbourne make an unlikely pair.

But this week, they travelled to the US capital Washington, along with a delegation of federal politicians from across the political aisle, to campaign for the release of Julian Assange.

The Australian delegation is hoping to bring attention to the issue ahead of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s trip to the US at the end of next month.
