Australian nuclear victims still have no compensation
Australian victims of British nuclear tests in the 1950’s – are pressing the new Labor government – to finally recognise their illnesses and provide veterans entitlements or compensation. Ten British nuclear bombs were tested on Australian soil and both Defence and civilian personnel were present. Despite contracting various cancers – many of those involved have not been given basic war veteran payments – because they were not serving in an actual conflict zone. A 2003 review of the issue by Justice Clark recommended veteran status – but the Howard government refused to implement the findings. The veterans – many now in their 70’s – say the British and Australian governments treated them as guinea pigs
