Hopes of a free press in Egypt since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak looks less likely following the arrest of Australian freelance journalist Austin Mackell. Mubarak’s fall one year ago was supposed to pave the way for the emergence of a democratic Egypt after three decades of dictatorship. However, the caretaker military rulers are showing little sign of making way for a democratically elected government any time soon, as they continue their crackdown on protesters and foreign media.
