The rise of Islamophobic sentiment in Australia has given pause for reflection around the country, following the massacre of 50 Muslim worshippers at the Masjid al-Noor mosque on Deans Avenue and the Linwood Avenue mosque in Christchurch at the hands of an Australian citizen from Grafton living in New Zealand.

The unfettered discussion of divisive and hateful language and its journey from the fringes of society into mainstream political debate has stoked an Islamophobic sentiment which some now see as a legitimate political view.
