Burmese Australians took to the streets today demanding the immediate release of pro-democracy leader Aung Sung Suu Kyi who was taken from her home to a notorious Rangoon prison over the weekend. She was put on trial today for allegedly breaching the terms of her house arrest by allowing a foreign visitor into her home. Protesters in Sydney say Burma’s military regime is trying to keep the well-known opposition leader imprisoned in the lead up to next year’s elections, which are widely seen as rigged. They want the Australian government to impose tougher sanctions and put more pressure on Burma.
