Australia named responsible for breaching human rights of asylum seekers

Last week, the United Nations Human Rights Committee handed down two landmark decisions that ruled Australia breached international human rights law through the arbitrary offshore detention of asylum seekers in Nauru.
It’s the first time Australia has been named responsible for arbitrary offshore detention by an official body.
The committee has called on the Australian government to provide compensation for people who have been sent to offshore detention, and take steps to avoid similar human rights violations from occurring again.
