Australia declines to apologise for spying on its “closest friend”

Tony Abbott has today watered down expectations that he would apologise for revelations that the Australian government has been spying on Indonesian senior officials. In a formal statement, he stated, “Australia should not be expected to apologise for the steps we take to protect our country now or in the past, any more than other governments should be expected to apologise for the similar steps that they have taken.” The reaction from Indonesia has been swift, saying Tony Abbott had “belittled” the issue.
