Prime Minister Julia Gillard addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York earlier and she took the opportunity to further Australia’s claim for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Australia is competing with Finland and Luxembourg for one of two available non-permanent places on the Security Council.Academic and author Alison Broinowski has worked extensively in the Australian Foreign Service and she is not convinced that Australia will successfully win a seat on the Council.
