Last year in South Africa 1,175 rhinos were killed by poachers. That’s 3 rhinos a day, or one rhino killed every 8 hours. The demand for rhino horn in Asian countries has created a black market in Africa, that authorities have been struggling to combat. Conservationists say that at the current rate of poaching, rhinos could face extinction by 2020. But one man is trying to save the species. The Australian Rhino Project aims to bring 80 rhinos to Australia in the next four years, as an insurance policy against extinction. Ninah Kopel spoke to Ray Dearlove, founder of the project, about his ambitious plan.
