Aussies riled up over Lebanon war
The size of the anti-war protests over the weekend in our capital cities made international headlines. Even the Israeli media stopped its 24/7 news coverage of the Lebanon war for a few seconds to deliver footage of Australian protestors. A fair few Australians – mostly but not exclusively of Lebanese descent – showed up in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelade to demonstrate their support for the victims of continuous violent attacks in Southern Lebanon. While the weekend rallies were peaceful, attacks on a mosque and a synagogue in the suburbs of Sydney epitomize the strong emotions some Australians feel towards the conflict. Labour MP, Linda Burney and Jarvis Ryan from Stop The War Coalition, both attended the rally in Sydney and they discussed the strong feelings that ordinary Australians have about the Middle East conflict.
