Results are out for Australia from the survey of education outcomes called PISA, and they’re not good. Our goal is to be among the top five countries in PISA by 2025, but today’s results show that in fact we’re falling behind. It’s not all bad news. While we slipped from our 2003 positions in maths, science and reading, our overall result is still above the OECD average.
Worryingly though, there are distinct differences in outcomes between private and public schools, Indigenous and non-Indigenous kids and city kids vs country kids. And the debate is on as to why.
