Aussies drinking more than ever
Australia is developing a two tiered drinking culture according to a report released today by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. Our heaviest drinkers are consuming upto 140 more standard drinks per year while the country’s light drinkers are consuming less than usual. The annual intake of our countries biggest drinkers now exceeds 3000 drinks a year averaging more than eight alcoholic beverages a day.
With dangerous drinking on the rise, Professor Mike Daube says decision makers should be more concerned about the amount of the advertising promoting alcoholic beverages and the influence companies are able to wield over young Aussies.
