Aussie Media use of “islam” and “terror”
The Australian newspaper has come under fire from the press watchdog for its use of a headline, linking murders and terrorism with Muslims. The Press Council has upheld a complaint about the headline “Muslims Kill 27” to describe terror attacks in Turkey last year. The Council said the Murdoch newspapers use of this religious term may have been accurate in a strict sense, but was too all-encompassing to be fair to people of Islamic faith. But in a similar case the Press Council dismissed a complaint about another Australian headline, “Islamic terror kills peace in Baghdad and Jerusalem”, ruling that the term “Islamic terror” was within the bounds of normal useage. The Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations, or “FAIR” made the second complaint and believes the decision to dismiss it was unjust. FAIR spokesperson Kuranda Seyit told Mark Robinson the situations in Baghdad and Jerusalem are very different.
