The High Court ruled last week that the government had the right to keep unsuccessful asylum seekers in detentiuon indefinitely if nowhere could be found to return them to. Abbas Al-Khafaji is now back in the Baxter Detention Centre after 21 months living in the South Australian community. His friend John Haran says the fact that he could live free unsupported by the government is an argument for allowing other detainees out. Haran is hopeful that Minister Vanstone will use her discretionary powers to free Abbas.
