Whilst the Government welcomed news of the High Court’s ruling on the repatriation of Asylum Seekers, human rights activists and former refugees are speaking out. The High Court’s ruling was clear in its support for the idea of ‘temporary’ protection and stated that the onus was on the Asylum seeker to prove that they’d be in danger if they were sent back to their country of origin. Phil Glendenning is the director of the Edmund Rice Centre, which has followed the plight of asylum seekers once deported from Australia. Both he and Baqir Rezaie, a former asylum seeker, spoke to The Wire about the reality of the High Court’s decision.
