New research has concluded that Australia’s fisheries are in danger of becoming unsustainable. The researched showed that fish numbers in areas in which fishing is allowed, are declining at double the rate of those in areas where fishing is limited or not allowed.

The study calls for an increase in marine protected areas to combat the problem. The peak government body in charge, The Australian Fisheries Management Authority, vehemently disputes the findings. And say that fisheries management in Australia is adequate and sustainable.

So how bad is the situation? And what needs to be done?
