APEC sees Sydney locked in a secure embrace
As we all know, the APEC summit – which stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation – is underway in Sydney. Already its apparent that the security climate around the meeting has been considerably tightened. NSW Police have been given additional powers to not only search and arrest people, but to lock them up for the duration of the forum meetings. The police powers will last until midnight on the 12th of September. President George Bush and Vladimir Putin are two of the 21 world leaders coming to APEC to discuss Free Trade and climate change, as well as regional stability and counter-terrorism. Sydney-siders have found themselves facing a whole range of new security measures – including a 5 kilometre, 2.8 metre high fence, the purchase of a water cannon, and 31 mobile transit buses to be used as holding cells.
