Anti-war t-shirt arrest raises free speech concern
Picture it. You are sitting back, enjoying a cup of coffee and out of nowhere appears a police officer, informing you that you have to leave the building now. That your 15 minutes of fame are over. Your crime? Wearing the wrong t-shirt. Sounds unbelievable? Think again. Mike Ferner served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Now he is a freelance writer and a member of Veterans For Peace, a group of ex-serviceman and women who campaign against the conflict in Iraq. He was arrested recently for wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words Veterans for Peace, whilst having a cup of coffee at Veterans medical facility in Chicago’s south side. Mike relayed the experience to The Wire.
