Like it or not, the Australian Government is subject to international law when it comes to the issue of detaining asylum seekers. That’s the message coming through from on visiting specialist on refugee law and asylum seekers. Professor Guy Goodwin-Gil. He is currently a senior research fellow at All Souls College at Oxford University and previously he held the position of Professor of International Refugee Law. This weekend he took part in a conference at the University of Technology Sydney, which aimed to reinvigorate the debate around asylum seekers. This is fact not the first time Professor Goodwin-Gil has travelled to Australia. In fact he lived here in the last seventies and early 80s. And he says Australia’s treatment of refugees back then was a vastly different affair.
