Last Thursday, the subject of marriage in the gay and lesbian community came into the spotlight once again when the Federal Government launched a second Bill in Parliament to ban same-sex marriages. Labour’s called this a political stunt – but still voted with the government to pass the law in the house. Gay and Lesbian rights groups are arguing that with the lead up to the election, the community is being used as a political pawn. They say that after 20 years of fighting for equality and having some rights recognised – the government is trying to turn back the clock. Elissar Mukhtar asked Senator Brian Grieg, Democrats Spokesman for Law and Justice why the government is making such an issue out of gay marriage.
