The Australian Government has proposed to charge a fee of 5 to 15 dollars for each cubic metre of dredging material disposed of into the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Companies can currently obtain approval to dispose of dredging material without any fee. Activists have raised concern over the proposal saying charging companies will reinforce a policy that allows companies to pollute the reef, and some experts say putting a price on pollution is not enough.
