While the awards are most famous for being given to Aboriginal musicians, a number of awards are also granted for outstanding contributions to the Indigenous community. Chris Sara, principal of the Cherbourg State School in Queensland, took out the Department of Education, Science and Training Award for Outstanding Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Education. Within eighteen months in the job, Chris raised attendance levels at his school by 95%.
