The Ngarrindjeri people at the mouth of the River Murray will tomorrow welcome back the remains of 79 of their ancestors as part of the Museum of Victoria’s policy of returning displaced bodies and sacred objects. However the traditional areas where their bodies should be buried are either Crown Land or privately owned beach resort areas. Ngarrindjeri Heritage Committee Chairperson Tom Trevorrow says the community will be negotiating with the state government to allow the bodies to be returned to the proper places.
