ALP teaching policy achieves mixed score
The Federal Opposition’s new teacher pay plan has received a mixed reaction. Critics claim the plan is a pale imitation of the Government’s policy, while supporters are maintaining that the blueprint is finally providing a system of reward to those most passionate of teachers. Labor leader Kim Beazley is offering bonuses of up to ten thousand dollars each year to those teachers that are reaching high standards in public schools. However, the Greens say Labor is going about rewarding teachers in completely the wrong way. Senator Kerry Nettle says all teachers are in need of more money and better career progression but says instead this policy only offers divisive performance-related pay. But, the Deputy President of the NSW Teacher’s Federation, Angelo Gavrielatos welcomes the policy. He says it’s different to the Federal Government’s ‘performance pay’ proposals.
