Refugee activists both outside and inside the Labor party were hoping the weekend’s National Conference would see a change of heart on the treatment of asylum seekers. But their hopes for agreement on closing down the Regional Processing Centres in Manus Island and Nauru were dashed and many were left shocked and disappointed Bill Shorten backed the Coalition policy of turning back boats.
