US officials have announced the discovery of one trillion dollars worth of mineral resources in Afghanistan. The deposits include gold, copper, iron and one of the world’s largest stores of lithium – the power source for phone and computer batteries. The Soviets identified some of these resources during their occupation but aerial scanning has revealed the extent of the wealth. A trillion dollars could fund development in the war-ravaged nation, and will surely affect the conduct of the war.
