James Meek has been a foreign correspondent reporting from hot spots like Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and the former Soviet Union. He was also reporting from Afghanistan when 9/11 happened , and has spent time there since . Instead of writing a book about his experiences though, he’s been writing a novel. “We Are Now Beginning Our Descent” is set in Afghanistan. Although he says its purely fictional, the story has something to say about how governments, both East and West, have mis-handled the conflict.
