Activists say military deal with Indonesia ignores human rights

The leaders of the Indonesian and Australian governments held further talks today in Darwin. Many issues have been discussed at the Darwin summit, but alleged human rights violations by Indonesian security forces in Indonesia’s restive province of West Papua haven’t made it on to the agenda. Amidst calls by human rights activists for the Australian government to give more attention to abuses in Papua, Australia has instead announced a plan to increase military co-operation with Indonesia by carrying out joint training exercises.
