Asylum seekers waiting to have their cases reviewed are not eligible for Medicare assistance. The ACT government has now joined Victoria and announced it will offer health assistance to such people. Health Minister Katie Gallagher says it won’t cost much and sends a message of compassion. Deputy opposition leader Jackie Burke disagrees and is worried that the ruling will make the ACT a magnet for asylum seekers from all over the country.
