Abuses in US Prisons
There’s a saying that “a picture says a thousand words” and sometimes, as in the case of Iraqi prisoner abuse at the Abu Graib prison, it’s enough to warrant outrage and investigations. But in other cases people just don’t want to know about the torture going on in their own country. Anne Marie Cusac has been reporting on abuses in the US prison system for eight years. She’s an award-winning investigative journalist and works for an online journal “The Progressive” in the US, whose mission is to be a journalistic voice for peace and social justice in the US and overseas. On Saturday it was the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, and although there are abuses going on in many parts of the world, we don’t often hear about American citizens being systematically mistreated in US jails. Anne-Marie Cusac recently wrote an article titled “Abu Graib, USA”, documenting incidents that happened in the US prison system, closely resembling incidents that happened at Abu Graib, in Iraq
