Abused Women Photos ‘Too Confronting’ in Art Display
One in three women globally has been beaten, raped or abused in her lifetime, and Amnesty International has set out to make people see with their own eyes, the desperate state of suffering women. Stark black and white photographic exhibitions of abused women, by photographers from around the world, were launched today to mark the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women. Amnesty thought bars and cafes might make for effective galleries, but the photographs were too much for the Bliss Organic Cafe in Adelaide, who changed it’s mind at the last minute after seeing the morbid images, and ordered they be taken down. The Wire’s Alex Parry caught up with Amnesty’s Stop Violence Against Women Campaign Co-ordinator, Ellie Tompuri, as the team was taking the photos down from the cafe.
