Abuse reports frustrate Indigenous leaders
Last night Indigenous Affairs Minister Mal Brough alleged paedophile rings were operating in remote Indigenous communities, prompting angry calls for him to hand over evidence to police. The mainstream media has made a fine meal out of shocking abuse stories, with the discussion flowing easily onto perceived causes such as alcohol and substance abuse. Labour Party President Warren Mundine recognises a clear link between overcrowding and child sexual abuse in Indigenous communities. Nyungar man and Associate Professor in developmental health at Curtin University, Ted Wilkes, says Government has an important role to play, but Indigenous men can take action too. Sharon Payne, Director of the North Australia Aboriginal Justice Agency, expressed her frustration about mainstream reporting of the issue.
