“Aborigines and the ‘Sport of Kings'” is a new book by John Maynard, whose own father was an Aboriginal jockey. He says he wrote the book because he felt it was time to celebrate the forgotten achievements of the many indigenous jockeys, trainers and horsehandlers who have worked in the racing industry.
The book includes the story of Frank Reys who won the 1973 Melbourne Cup and Darby McCarthy who enjoyed international acclaim and lived the high life in European society because of his racing success.
