Two tamil refugees at Sydney’s Villawood Detention Centre were to be presented ‘Original Nation Passports’ today from Aboriginal elders. There are around sixty refugees being held indefinitely in detention. It’s not their asylum seeker claim keeping them there, but a negative ASIO security assessment.
There is currently no right to appeal the ASIO decision. However a group of refugees are challenging their indefinite detention, taking their complaint to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the UNHCR.
