Aboriginal Elder Sylvia Scott’s State Funeral

A State Funeral service was held today for Aboriginal Elder Sylvia Scott, who has died at the age of 83. Better known as ‘Auntie Sylvia,’ she worked tirelessly to better the health and education of Indigenous communities in South Sydney. Ms Scott, a Wiradjeri woman, was born on Erambie reserve, Cowra in 1927. After moving to Sydney, she established the Murawina Preschool for Aboriginal children in Redfern and became a founding member of Wyanga, a community aged care programme. Her funeral was today attended by the Premier Kristina Keneally and New South Wales Governor, Her Excellency Marie Bashir at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.
